Suddenly alone among the reeds I wander, sunlight streaming through the feathery tops, never quite reaching the dense tangle below. There is no path to be illuminated. I pull stiff handfuls, parting the way — a way — knowing she is in there.

When I reach her I will pull her down, flattening a scratchy bed of reeds beneath us, and I will have her there surrounded by the scent of dry grasses and cool, damp earth. Writhing like snakes, bodies intertwined and woven into the grass beneath us, we will drink of each other until again we are one.
